Calypso's Island Raft — Lashed Driftwood Sailing Raft for One or Two
by Makeit_official
A small lashed-log sailing raft under 5 m, built entirely from salvaged driftwood, rope and twisted wool cordage, with a single square wool sail to catch the wind home. Built for a confident shipwright working alone on an island with no metal fasteners — every joint is a lashing. Suitable for calm, sheltered water only; maximum recommended crew weight two adults. Note that wool cordage absorbs water under sustained load — inspect all stays and lashings before and after every voyage and re-tension as needed.
Wood
Main hull logs
7 straight driftwood logs — each 400 cm long, 18–22 cm diameter (form the raft deck/hull)
Cross beams
4 straight driftwood poles — each 260 cm long, 10–12 cm diameter (bind the hull logs across the top and bottom)
Mast pole
1 straight driftwood pole — 300 cm long, 10 cm diameter (carries the sail)
Yard pole
1 light driftwood pole — 220 cm long, 6 cm diameter (holds the top edge of the sail)
Steering oar blank
1 flat plank or split log — 250 cm long, 20 cm wide, 4 cm thick (shaped into steering oar)
Mast wedges
6 hardwood offcuts — each ~15 cm long, tapered (lock mast in its socket)
Hardware
Marine rope
~60 m of rope — 10–12 mm diameter, natural fibre (all structural lashings)
Twisted wool cordage
~40 m of woollen thread twisted into 4–6 mm cord (seizings, sail edging, rigging bindings)
Woven wool sail cloth
1 square of tight woollen weave — 200 × 200 cm (the sail)
Wooden toggles/pegs
~40 hardwood pegs — 12 cm long, 2 cm diameter

Instructions
Hull: select and cut 7 logs, each 400 cm long, 18–22 cm diameter — choose the straightest, driest driftwood available. Cross beams: cut 4 poles, each 260 cm long, 10–12 cm diameter. Mast: cut 1 pole 300 cm long, 10 cm diameter. Yard: cut 1 pole 220 cm long, 6 cm diameter. Oar blank: cut 1 plank 250 cm long, 20 cm wide, 4 cm thick. Wedges: shape 6 tapered hardwood offcuts ~15 cm long. Pegs: carve 8 hardwood pegs, 12 cm long, 2 cm diameter. Note: you will also need a large sailmaker's needle or bone fid for stitching the sail hem in Step 6 — prepare or source one before you begin. Measure and lay out all pieces on flat ground to confirm you have every item before proceeding. Safety: swing the axe away from your body with feet clear; check each log carefully for hidden splits or rot before committing it to a role.
